Bansko resort

Bansko is a ski resort in Southwestern Bulgaria, located at the foot of the beautiful Pirin Mountains. Its altitude is 925 m above sea level. Bansko is approximately 160 km away from Sofia. The native population is around 12 000 people. It is considered to be the fastest developing Ski and Winter Resort in Eastern Europe.

The archeological traces of the inhabitants of Bansko date back to the early periods of the Roman Empire.
Until 1912 Bansko was a part of the Ottoman Empire, but had a unique self-rule autonomy granted by the sultan. The town was ruled by an assembly of the elders, while justice was administered by an Ottoman judge. It was incorporated in Bulgaria in 1912 after the end of First Balkan War.
Bansko became an important trade and crafts center during the National Revival Perod (18th-19th c.), when the local merchants traded between the Aegean and Central Europe. In the very same time Bansko established itself as a center of culture and enlightment. The town is the birth place of many great figures of our history: Paisii of Hilendar, the author of the famous Slav-Bulgarian History (1762), Neofit Rilski – an educated man and a leader of the National Revival, Toma Vishanov-Molera - the founder of the Bansko School of Painting.

Many modern critics believe that the Bansko School of Painting was the best one in the Bulgarian lands during the 18th-19th c. Artists from the Bansko school of Painting broke the established church canons and introduced secular and historic themes to church painting. Nevertheless, the collection of icons painted by Bansko masters is certainly worth visting. The iconostasis in the Holy Trinity Church in the town center is a fine piece of this art.
Do not forget to visit the remains of the late-medieval single-nave churches "St George" and "St Elijah" in the southeast part of Bansko. Other “must visit” places include the House of Neofit Rilski, as well as the Sirleshova, Boianova, and Velianova Houses - all of them are typical and beautifully preserved 19th century buildings, now architectural monuments. Also, there are two interesting monuments erected in the town- the commemorating Nikola Vaptsarov and the one of Paisii Hilendarski.
